HOW GOOD CALLS BEGIN

The first 30 seconds decide an outbound call

A good caller says who they are, explains why they are calling and then listens. That is where trust begins.

The person answering the phone decides very quickly whether they like and trust the caller. If we lose that decision, the rest of the script does not matter.

Say who you are and why you are calling

We do not hide the purpose of the call. The caller says plainly who they are and why they are calling. No trick, no fake urgency and no long opening designed to stop the other person getting a word in.

People know when somebody is working around the truth. It makes them suspicious before the real conversation has even begun. A straight opening gives them a reason to listen because they understand what is happening.

Who I am.Why I am calling.Now I listen.

The caller must listen next

The opening is not a race to deliver the whole pitch. Once the person understands the reason for the call, the caller has to listen. If the person cannot help, does not want to take part or should not be asked, we do not push them.

A script can give a caller the facts. It cannot tell them when to pause, what matters in the answer or when the decent thing is to stop asking. That judgement belongs to the person making the call.

Trust comes before the result

The first thirty seconds are not where I look for the final result. They are where I look for the start of a real conversation. Does the person stay on the line? Do they answer properly? Does the call stop sounding like a stranger reading at them and begin to sound like two people talking?

This is why average connected-call length tells me so much about a new caller. The agent who gets through the first thirty seconds honestly gives the conversation a chance to reach two minutes. The agent who does not build trust is normally finished around thirty seconds, whatever the script says next.

No script can rescue a caller people do not trust

Scripts have a place. They keep required information accurate and make sure important points are covered. They are not a replacement for listening, judgement or a human voice.

A good outbound call begins simply: say who you are, say why you are calling and listen to the answer. Everything useful comes after that.
