TWO DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES

Surveys must be exact; fundraising must be free

Research callers ask every fixed question as written to protect the result, while fundraising callers control the human conversation.

Research and fundraising both need brilliant callers, but they give those callers two very different jobs.

Survey wording cannot move

Research agents ask the question as written. Changing it can lead the respondent and damage the result. The skill is in winning the minute needed to make the person like and trust the caller, then moving cleanly through the fixed interview.

Conversation waits until the end

If a respondent wants to expand while the survey still has fixed questions left, the caller explains that they can return to it at the end. The final open question asks whether there is anything else the person wants to say or how the survey could improve.

Fundraising needs the opposite freedom

Fundraising agents must say the legal and payment information correctly. Outside those required parts, they are free to follow what the person says. Forcing an inappropriate script after somebody has shared something serious is exactly what we do not want.
